EXPERIENCE

NDE Associates, Inc., Houston, 1994-present, President.
Birring NDE Center, Inc., Houston, 2008-present, President.
NDT Consultant to several Fortune 500 companies to include BP Refinery, BP America Upstream, NRG Energy, Eastman, ExxonMobil, Rohm and Haas, Total (Europe), Entergy and Chevron.  Conduct specialized eddy current and ultrasonic inspections for petrochemical plants and power plants.  This includes inspection of heat exchangers, vessels, piping systems, structural components etc. Develop NDT techniques and procedures for  plant inspections. Develop NDT techniques for plant inspections. Conduct audits and review NDT procedures.

Developed NDT Training programs for the Birring NDE Center. Conduct basic NDT and advanced training in eddy current, ultrasonic TOFD and Phased Arrays.  Conduct NDT training programs internationally in Korea, Japan, Taiwan, India, Pakistan, Canada, Mexico and Philippines.

Houston Lighting and Power Company, 1989-1994, Staff Engineer. Fully responsible for implementing the latest NDT technology for inspection of power plant components. These include boilers, steam turbines, condensers, feedwater heaters and piping systems. Implemented the state of the art computerized ultrasonic and eddy current systems that include Tomoscan, UDRPS, ECT MAD4D, ISIS and Ferroscope.

Southwest Research Institute, San Antonio, Texas, 1980-89, Group Leader. Developed and implemented inspection methods and systems for various applications that included measurement of corrosion, detection of underclad cracking, sizing of cracks, detection of hydrogen attack and measurement of wear. Developed software packages to store inspection data, and signal processing routines to analyze data. Some of the technology developed is currently being used by petrochemical plants and electric utilities. Awarded US patents on detection of High Temperature Hydrogen Attack and for ultrasonic measurement of wear.

Promoted programs with potential clients, wrote proposals, managed projects, prepared final reports and made presentations. Managed contracts for more than twenty five different US companies, traveled nationally and internationally and gained diverse experience in NDT methods.

Memberships: American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT)
Publications: Sixty publications, twenty five final reports and two US patents.
US Patents:
A. S. Birring, et al. "Method and Means for Detection of Hydrogen Attack by Ultrasonic Wave Velocity Measurements" US Patent, 4,890,496, January 2, 1990
A.S. Birring, et.al." Method of Wear Monitoring Using the Ultrasonic Phase Comparison", US Patent 4,711,120, Dec 1987.
